  1. The Ultimate Man Cave: Part 2

You have your location chosen, you’ve decided on your desired television display, now what? The next step in creating The Ultimate Man Cave is ensuring you have the perfect sound for your space.

Sound systems are not “one size fits all.” You need a system set up that gives you the best sound for your particular space. That’s where Modern Systems comes in. Not only can we provide you with the perfect sound system, we can set it up in a way that utilizes the room’s full sound potential.

If you have a larger space, surround sound may be your best option. With a 7.1 system, you will feel like the movies are coming alive around you. You can experience movies the way directors intended, listen to music as if you were in the venue and become emerged in games as if they were actually going on around you.
In-wall and in-ceiling speakers keeps them out of view and allow surround sound in spaces that typically would not have much room allowance for multiple speakers.

If your space is not very large and surround sound is not the best option, sound bars may be the best fit. A sound bar is a set of speakers that is mounted right below your flat screen that works best in small to medium sized rooms. With designs to work with all sizes, they provide much better sound than the tiny speakers built into your flat panel. Because flat panels are designed to be thin and sleek, there is not much room for decent speakers. Sure, it may look great, but with sub-par sound you cheat yourself and your guests out of what could be a wonderful cinematic experience. In order to have the Ultimate Man Cave, great sound becomes a vital necessity.

Tune in for our next post where we will cover another important aspect of The Ultimate Man Cave, temperature and lighting control.
Modern Systems has been serving Kentucky and surrounding states since 1979. We are on of the largest security companies in Kentucky of our kind. 2. Tips For Fire Escape Planning

Creating a fire escape plan is a great way to prepare for when tragedy strikes. When a smoke alarm sounds, you don’t have much time to get out of the home before you risk injuries or death due to smoke inhalation and fire. Having a plan in place and practicing it will help your family know how to react and evacuate quickly and safely. Here are a few tips in fire escape planning:

    • •Children as youngg as 3 years old can follow a fire escape plan they have practiced often. Yet, many families don’t have detailed escape plans, and those that do usually don’t practice them.
    • •Practicing a fire escape plan and fire-safe behaviors on a regular basis can mean the difference between life and death.
    • •Draw a basic diagram of your home, marking all windows and doors, and plan 2 routes of escape out of each room. Consider various fire scenarios when creating your plan and develop actions for a safe escape. Plan for each member of your family, including babies or toddlers who may be unable to escape on their own. Download a grid to create an escape plan. Click Here.
    • •Keep exits clear of debris and toys.
    • •Keep your child’s bedroom door closed. If a ahllway fire occurs, a closed door may hinder the smoke from over powering your baby or toddler, giving fire fighters extra time for rescue.
    • •Teach toddlers not to hide from fire fighters. Their uniforms can be scary in time of crisis. Teach children that fire fighters are there to help in an emergency. Take children for a tour at your local fire station so that they can see a fire fighter in full gear.
    • •Teach your children to crawl under smoke to reduce smoke inhalation.
    • •Teach your children how to touch closed doors to see if they are hot before opening. If so, use an alternate escape plan.
    • •Have a safe meeting place outside the home and teach children never to go back inside.

Creating a fire escape plan helps prepare a child and lets them know how to respond in the event of a fire. Practice the plan as a family once a month. When you first create one, you may want to practice it a little more often until your children can remember it well, especially for small children and toddlers. Remember to change the batteries in your smoke alarm when you change time on your clock for daylight savings time, and to test the alarm regularly. Call us to learn how Modern Systems can help you. 3. Smoke Alarms Increase Your Chances For Safety– Information and Tips

Kentucky’s average fire death rate tied for the eighth highest in the U.S. A lounge fire in May 1977, which killed 165 people, accounted for the highest death toll in a Kentucky fire since 1899.

Two-thirds of home fires that kill children under the age of 5 occur in homes without a working smoke alarm. Below are a few facts and tips about smoke alarms in the home.

    • • When fire breaks out, you have only seconds to escape its powerful heat, blinding smoke and deadly gases.
    • • Families can dramatically decrease their chances of surviving a fire simply by installing and maintaining working smoke alarms.
    • • Install and maintain smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside of sleeping areas. Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound
    • • Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.
    • • If you keep the door of your baby’s bedroom closed, keep a working smoke alarm in the room and use a baby monitor so you can hear when the alarm sounds.
    • • As soon as your children are old enough to understand, familiarize them with the sound of the smoke alarm.
    • • Teach your children that when a smoke alarm goes off, they must leave the home and go to the designated family meeting place outside.
    • • An ionization smoke alarm is generally more responsive to flaming fires, and a photoelectric smoke alarm is generally more responsive to smoldering fires. For the best protection, both types of alarms or a combination alarm (photoelectric and ionization) should be installed in homes.
    • • Smoke alarms that include a recordable voice announcement in addition to the usual alarm sound, may be helpful in waking children through the use of a familiar voice.
    • • Smoke rises; install smoke alarms following manufacturer’s instructions high on a wall or on a ceiling. Save manufacturer’s instructions for testing and maintenance.
    • • If cooking fumes or steam sets off nuisance alarms, replace the alarm with an alarm that has a “hush” button. A “hush” button will reduce the alarm’s sensitivity for a short period of time.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and How To Avoid It

  4. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and How To Avoid It.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and initially non irritating toxic gas produced by incomplete combustion in fuel burning devices. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that CO exposures and poisonings occur more often during the fall and winter, when people are more likely to use gas furnaces, heaters and generators in their homes. CDC statistics show more than 15,000 emergency room visits and nearly 500 deaths from unintentional, no-fire related CO poisoning each year.

Persons with CO poisoning often overlook the symptoms (e.g., headache, nausea, dizziness, or confusion), and undetected exposure can be fatal. CO poisoning is often mistooken for a viral illness such as the flu because the symptoms are very similar.

Sources of CO poisoning are: fires, vehicles left running in doors, faulty furnaces, generators, portable heaters, unventilated power equiptment, dryers, water heaters and other house hold appliances.

You are probably asking yourself right now what you can do to protect you and your family form this silent killer. Here are a few tips to keep you safe.

    • •Have your heating system, water heater, and any other gas-, oil-, or coal-burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.
    • •Install a battery-operated CO detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall.
    • •If your CO detector sounds, evacuate your home immediately and telephone 911.
    • •Seek prompt medical attention if you suspect CO poisoning and are feeling dizzy, light-headed, or nauseated.
    • •Do not use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove, or other gasoline- or charcoal-burning device inside your home, basement, or garage or near a window.
    • •Do not run a car or truck inside a garage attached to your house, even if you leave the door open.
    • •Do not burn anything in a stove or fireplace that is not vented.
    • •Do not heat your house with a gas oven.

Did you know Modern Systems can not only provide you with a security system, but we can also install a CO detector. Coupled with Total Connect, you can receive alerts and text messages if an abnormal amount of CO is detected. We service Lexington, KY, Somerset, KY, Bowling Green, KY and all surrounding areas. 5. Home Security Systems: Should I Have One?

If you have a family you want protected and/or valuables you want secure, the answer is a resounding yes! In this time of economic uncertainty and rising crime statistics, home safety and security is a top concern for most home owners.

How Does a Home Security Alarm System Work?

Security alarm systems usually include a combination of motion sensors and door and window contacts that connect to a home alarm device with keypad or touch screen controls. When the system is armed and active, the sensors and contacts will trigger the alarm if there is movement or if a door or window is opened. If the alarm is not immediately disarmed by punching in the correct code, the monitoring center is notified. In turn they will call you, and if needed, the police.

    Is It Worth The Cost?

A security system is a proven deterrent for would-be burglars. In fact, a recent Rutgers University study found that the presence of residential burglar alarm systems actually decreases crime, making homes that have security alarms far less attractive to intruders.
Peace of mind is another major benefit. The new features of systems make it possible to cover concerns beyond breaking and entering. It is now possible for your security system to alert you when your children arrive home from school, warn you of fires & carbon monoxide exposures, and even alert you to frozen pipes and potential plumbing disasters while out of town. Need another reason? Reduced insurance costs! Talk to your home insurance provider to find out what type of discount a security system will give you. With the insurance discount, the cost of monitoring goes down to just cents a day.

    Where Do I Start?

Start by contacting Modern Systems. We have been in the business since 1979. Because we are locally owned and operated, we can offer you the best service and quick turn around time. You can then determine whether or not you are satisfied with what we can do for you, and if you are, then a contract will be signed and your new system will be installed quickly. Upon the completion of installation, your representative will meet with you again to train you on your new system. What are you waiting for? 7. What is Home Automation and What Can It Do For Me?

These days you seem to hear the phrase “Home Automation” thrown around quite a bit. What exactly is it? Home Automation is making your home, and it’s appliances, lighting, electronics, HVAC, and security work together to make your life simple. It can be as simple as you arrive home, and the lights turn on as soon as you open the door, or you can have a slightly more elaborate scenerio. You begin to pull into your drive way, with the touch of a button your garage door opens, your security system disarms, and the lights come on. The temperature changes to your personal setting, and the TV comes on and is tuned to your favorite channel. It really is up to you. You can be as simple or creative as you choose to turn your home into a smart home. Take a look at some of the things home automation can do for you.

    Leaving Home

Anytime you leave home simply arm your security system. From there, Control4 does the rest.

    • -lights turn off
    • -any electronics left on will turn off
    • -any music left playing is turned off
    • -all Control4 door locks are automatically locked

    Ready For Bed

With the press of a button, the following happens automatically…

    • -if unlocked, perimeter Control4 Doors are locked
    • -thermostats are set back to desired night time settings
    • -if garage doors are left open, they close automatically
    • -security system is armed to the night time mode
    • -all inside lights are turned off and a pathway scene is turned on

    While At Home

    • -Never enter a dark house again. Select lights will automatically come on when you arrive home by simply opening the door.
    • -When someone rings the door bell, a pleasant chime can sound through interior and exterior speakers, and you can see who is at the door from TV’s and/or other Control4 devices throughout your home.

    Alarm System

    • -If sytem goes into alarm, and if dark, Control4 interior and exterior lights come on instantly. If day time, lights do not come on.
    • -A custom voice message such as “Burglar Alarm, Burglar Alarm” is announced through all interior audio speakers, or just select ones.
    • -If a smoke or heat detector goes into alarm “Fire Alarm, Fire Alarm” is announced throughout the home and the lights come on. Thermostats turn the HVAC system off to avoid circulating smoke.
    • -If a person is detected around the perimeter of your home, your exterior lights are turned on and, if desired, a custom voice alert can play through the speakers.
    • -All Control4 light switches double as panic buttons. Simply tap three times and your security system is triggered.

  10. HVAC Protection: The WHIP

    How Does It Work?

The WHIP is a theft detection device that connects to an electronic security system and the service valve of the air conditioner or heat pump to be protected. It triggers the security system whe the pressure inside the refrigerant line of the air conditioner or heat pump drops below an acceptable level. This Drop in pressure happens very rapidly when the thieves cut the copper refrigerant line. Your security system will also be activated if the cables connecting the WHIP and security system together are cut, shorted, tampered with or removed.
