  1. How To Protect Your Home and Family During The Holidays

The Holidays. A time for joy, getting together with friends and family, giving gifts, and… break-ins?

Unfortunately burglars view the holiday season a little differently…for them, it is a time of opportunity to burglarize your home for cash, credit cards, and gifts.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, nearly 400,000 burglaries take place in the U.S. between November and December each year.

The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) says families should be extra careful during the winter months, especially if your home is filled with new gifts or if you have impending travel plans.

Here are a few tips to help keep you, your family and your home safe during the Holidays.

Do Not Advertise Your Travel Plans

However your home looks when you are home, is how it needs to look when you are away. Consider buying timers for your lights or having home automation which allows you to turn your lights on or off from your smartphone and gives you the ability to set “scenes” ahead of time so your lights come on and off automatically at times you have set. Our Lynx Touch and Tuxedo Touch security systems give you the ability to control your lights from your panel, and when coupled with Total Connect, you have the ability to control them straight from your smartphone, tablet or computer.

Ask your neighbors to make tracks in the snow going from the drive way to the front door and to park their car in your driveway from time to time. This will give the impression that you are home to potential burglars. Fresh snow drifts are a dead giveaway that your home is unoccupied. You can also put in a request with your local post office to hold your mail and packages while you are away.

Avoid posting your travel plans on social networking sites. You never know who may see them. Also, avoid posting pictures of your vacation until you return home.

Do Not Show Off Your Gifts

Your loved ones are not the only ones excited by gifts, burglars can be too. Avoid placing wrapped or unwrapped presents where they can be viewed from the outside of the home. Keep them away from windows, doors and any other part of the house that gives outsiders a peek in. Do not put boxes in your trash that advertise expensive or valuable items. Instead, burn them or cut them up and place them securely in a trash bag and/or can. It is not all too uncommon for burglars to look at someone’s trash in order to determine the value of breaking into their home.

Update and Secure Your Home Entry Points

Windows and doors are main entry points into your home. Make sure they are secure. A solid door with updated locks and a window with locks can be the deciding factor in whether or not your home is a good target. Easy target homes are the ones most often broken in to.

People often have the misconception that a deadbolt lock will keep you secure. The area around the dealbolt needs to be secure as well. Use atleast 3 inch screws when securing your locks and be sure the door ways are solid and strong. If the doorway gives in when someone tries to kick in your door, the type of locks you have no longer matter.

If running an extension cord through a window for outside holiday décor, make sure to secure the window. Use a rod to keep the window from opening past a certain point.

Be Very Aware Of Your Surroundings

Most burglars live in the neighborhood in which they commit the crime. When unloading your gifts from your car, be sure to look around and make sure no one is watching. It is also important to be mindful when loading your gifts into your car from the store. Make sure no one is following you to or from your car and be aware of any suspicious people lurking around. Avoid parking next to large vans as it not only hides you from the view of other people, but someone can be in the van waiting for an opportunity.

    Get A Home Security System

The biggest deterrent for burglars is an alarm system. According to statistics from a 2009 study by the Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice, an installed burglar alarm makes a home less attractive to intruders by 20 percent. Not only does it protect your home, but may help protect your neighbors’ as well. It has been found that neighborhoods where security systems are present are less likely to be a target for burglaries.

Modern Systems offers top of the line home security systems. With a trusted brand like Honeywell, you know you are getting reliable products. 2. The Ultimate Man Cave: Part 2

You have your location chosen, you’ve decided on your desired television display, now what? The next step in creating The Ultimate Man Cave is ensuring you have the perfect sound for your space.

Sound systems are not “one size fits all.” You need a system set up that gives you the best sound for your particular space. That’s where Modern Systems comes in. Not only can we provide you with the perfect sound system, we can set it up in a way that utilizes the room’s full sound potential.

If you have a larger space, surround sound may be your best option. With a 7.1 system, you will feel like the movies are coming alive around you. You can experience movies the way directors intended, listen to music as if you were in the venue and become emerged in games as if they were actually going on around you.
In-wall and in-ceiling speakers keeps them out of view and allow surround sound in spaces that typically would not have much room allowance for multiple speakers.

If your space is not very large and surround sound is not the best option, sound bars may be the best fit. A sound bar is a set of speakers that is mounted right below your flat screen that works best in small to medium sized rooms. With designs to work with all sizes, they provide much better sound than the tiny speakers built into your flat panel. Because flat panels are designed to be thin and sleek, there is not much room for decent speakers. Sure, it may look great, but with sub-par sound you cheat yourself and your guests out of what could be a wonderful cinematic experience. In order to have the Ultimate Man Cave, great sound becomes a vital necessity.

Tune in for our next post where we will cover another important aspect of The Ultimate Man Cave, temperature and lighting control.
Modern Systems has been serving Kentucky and surrounding states since 1979. We are on of the largest security companies in Kentucky of our kind. By now I am sure you are aware of the many ways Modern Systems is able to help protect you, your family, home or business. Now what can you do to add even more protection? Let’s start with some DIY home security tips to get you going.

    Securing Doors And Windows

    • • It is important to have strong and solid doors for exterior entrances. Solid, heavy wood or metal doors are some of the strongest.
    • • Dead bolt locks offer added protection against a door being kicked in. Installing a door jamb brace will also aid in protection.
    • • Make sure you have non-removable hinges secured with screws around 3 inches long.
    • • Keep all doors and windows in your home locked when you are away.
    • • Treat all windows and sliding glass doors with glass protection film. This will help against them being broken for entry.
    • • Install anti-lift mechanisms to the interiors of windows that slide up and down, and insert a metal or wooden rod into the tracks of patio doors and windows that slide sideways.

    Landscaping For Home Security

    • • Keep bushes and hedges cut down around doors and windows. You do not want to give a potential burglar a place to hide.
    • • Consider planting bushes that are sharp or prickly around windows to keep someone from wanting to hide in them.
    • • Remember that every thing you plant could potentially become a hiding place for a burglar. Plan your landscaping accordingly.

    Lighting and Timers

    • • Having lights and a television on all of the time, day and night, can be a sign to any one watching that you are away. Instead, consider installing timers on your lights and tv or having a home automation system for control from anywhere in the world. Call a sales representative for more information on lighting and electronics control. 1-800-252-7664
    • • Add LED security motion lighting to the perimeter around your home.

Make a plan to burglarize yourself. This way you can find all of the ways someone can enter your home. Look for hiding spots, areas where valuables are visible, and easy entrances to your home. There is no better way to completely protect your home than to understand what needs added security and protection.

Installing a home security system will add another layer of protection to your home. Call a sales representative today for a free, no obligation consultation and quote. We all know that sinking feeling you get in your stomach when you open that shockingly high utility bill—or the feeling of complete loss when something near and dear to you is stolen but could have easily been prevented. With realities such as these we are left to wonder what solutions are out there that can beat the current system.

Many people are educating themselves on basic energy management and home security. There are so many solutions available to us and we are left scratching our heads wondering which ones will give us the most value for the buck and will work the way we need it to. That is where Modern Systems steps in. With multiple solutions for the most basic and elaborate home owner needs, you can rest easy knowing you are getting quality products and services from reputable brands at prices hard to beat. Let’s take a look at some of the available solutions to many problems home owners face.

My Energy Bills Are Out of Control!

I know the burn of an unexpectedly high utility bill. Mine seem to be getting bigger and bigger by the month, but alas, there are solutions to this! First you need to find out where the high energy use is coming from. Could it be from the fridge? The HVAC? With the Tuxedo Touch, not only can you have affordable home security systems, but there is a program on the control panel to manage home energy use. You can pinpoint where the energy is being consumed, and take steps to remedy the situation. Check out this video to see how it works:

The Lynx and Tuxedo Touch give you power to have basic automation of your home. You can control your HVAC and Lighting right from the control panel, or from your computer, smart phone, or tablet. You can set schedules for the temperature to change to your preferred settings at a given time, or for chosen lights to turn off and on as you please. Perfect for those days when you are pulling in to work, and you suddenly realize you left the lights on, or you forgot to set the thermostat to a few degrees cooler while you are away. All you have to do is get on to your computer, phone, or tablet and turn the lights off and change the thermostat. It is that simple. You will never have to suffer the high utilities because of forgetfulness ever again.

Control 4 products take it all even a step further. Not only can you control your lights and thermostat, you can also control practically any appliance in the home. Left the TV on? That’s just fine. Simply get on your phone, computer or tablet and turn it off. You can control so many aspects of your home with this system it is mind boggling. But, with the simple and easy to use interface, any person – young or old- can operate the system.

I Have Valuables And Personal Items That I Cannot Leave Unsecure

Although I personally do not own too much of monetary value, I have a few things that I hold near and dear to my heart that I want to always be protected, even when I am not there. With any of the security systems Modern Systems has to offer, you will know that your possessions are safe and sound around the clock. From door contacts, to sirens, panic buttons and motion sensors, with a trusted brand like Honeywell, the products are tested and proven to be top of the line.

Not only will you be able to protect your valuables from theft, they will be protected from fire, smoke and water damage as well. Receive email alerts on your phone if the temperature in your home rises or drops to certain levels or if there is flooding in the home. If there is a fire, the correct authorities will be contacted. With quicker response times, you can prevent a lot of damage to your home and the things inside it.

We also have a special product designed to work with your HVAC unit to protect the copper pipes from theft and tampering.

I Have Way Too Many Remotes Cluttering My Table!

Ah, remotes. I love their convenience, but between my television, satellite and DVD player I have 3 remotes sitting on my coffee table. Go into another room in the house, and then there are 4 remotes for the systems in there. Wouldn’t it be just amazing to have one to operate all of the systems? Well, there is a way! With Control4 you can operate all of these things with just a single remote. Because Control4 is a modular system, you can start with just one room, and then add music, lighting, temperature and other rooms as the budget allows. Dream Big. Start Small.

I Want To Be Able To Communicate With People Throughout My Home

With 3 people living in a 2 story home, it always seems like we are all on different sides of the house, on different floors, all at different times. I am tired of yelling up the stairs at my husband. It wakes up my daughter and hurts my throat, plus, he never seems to hear me. With Control4 video intercom, the days of yelling and hoping he heard me are a thing of the past. I just go to my panel in my living room, push a button, and there he is, looking right at me and able to hear every word.

I can also check in on my daughter during nap time without waking her or just watch her sleep. She is so cute when she does that. Moments I normally would miss like her singing herself to sleep, singing her own made up silly song or writing on the walls with crayons are easily accessible with the tap of a finger. I can either watch without her ever knowing or I can catch her in the act. It’s always a wonderful thing.

The days of opening my door to complete strangers or people I’m really not in the mood for a visit from are gone as well. I can now view who is at my door and then make an informed decision on whether I should answer it, ignore it, or even just communicate with them through the intercom because I don’t want them to see me still in my PJ’s at 5 in the evening.

  7. What is Home Automation and What Can It Do For Me?

These days you seem to hear the phrase “Home Automation” thrown around quite a bit. What exactly is it? Home Automation is making your home, and it’s appliances, lighting, electronics, HVAC, and security work together to make your life simple. It can be as simple as you arrive home, and the lights turn on as soon as you open the door, or you can have a slightly more elaborate scenerio. You begin to pull into your drive way, with the touch of a button your garage door opens, your security system disarms, and the lights come on. The temperature changes to your personal setting, and the TV comes on and is tuned to your favorite channel. It really is up to you. You can be as simple or creative as you choose to turn your home into a smart home. Take a look at some of the things home automation can do for you.

    Leaving Home

Anytime you leave home simply arm your security system. From there, Control4 does the rest.

    • -lights turn off
    • -any electronics left on will turn off
    • -any music left playing is turned off
    • -all Control4 door locks are automatically locked

    Ready For Bed

With the press of a button, the following happens automatically…

    • -if unlocked, perimeter Control4 Doors are locked
    • -thermostats are set back to desired night time settings
    • -if garage doors are left open, they close automatically
    • -security system is armed to the night time mode
    • -all inside lights are turned off and a pathway scene is turned on

    While At Home

    • -Never enter a dark house again. Select lights will automatically come on when you arrive home by simply opening the door.
    • -When someone rings the door bell, a pleasant chime can sound through interior and exterior speakers, and you can see who is at the door from TV’s and/or other Control4 devices throughout your home.

    Alarm System

    • -If sytem goes into alarm, and if dark, Control4 interior and exterior lights come on instantly. If day time, lights do not come on.
    • -A custom voice message such as “Burglar Alarm, Burglar Alarm” is announced through all interior audio speakers, or just select ones.
    • -If a smoke or heat detector goes into alarm “Fire Alarm, Fire Alarm” is announced throughout the home and the lights come on. Thermostats turn the HVAC system off to avoid circulating smoke.
    • -If a person is detected around the perimeter of your home, your exterior lights are turned on and, if desired, a custom voice alert can play through the speakers.
    • -All Control4 light switches double as panic buttons. Simply tap three times and your security system is triggered.
