According to the FBI, Home Break-Ins (Burglaries) are the most common threat to our homes. In the United States a home burglary occurs every 13 seconds; 2.5 million each year. One out of every 6 homes will be broken into at some point. How can you beet the odds and keep your family, home and neighborhood safe?
Having a monitored security system installed can protect your home from being burglarized.
Ninety (90) percent of convicted burglars said they avoided homes with security systems, and would flee a home if an alarm went off. In fact, homes with security systems are three times less likely to be burglarized than a home without one. 74% of uncompleted intrusions can be credited to an audible alarm. Studies even show that having several homes in a neighborhood with alarm systems can deter would be burglars from attempting to break into surrounding homes.
Neighborhood watches also help to keep a neighborhood safe from burglaries and violence. Such programs have been started all over the country. Maybe one already exists in your community. These organizations don’t require frequent meetings (once a month or so). They don’t ask anyone to take personal risks to prevent crime. They leave the responsibility for catching criminals where it belongs – with the police. This is NOT a “vigilante” group: These groups gather citizens together to learn crime prevention from local authorities. You cooperate with your neighbors to report suspicious activities in the neighborhood, to keep an eye on homes when the resident is away, and to keep everyone in the area mindful of the standard precautions for property and self that should always be taken. Criminals avoid neighborhoods where such groups exist. Studies show that neighborhood with a neighborhood watch in place often experience lower crime rate than similar ones with out such program.
Neighborhoods with a sense of community are able to help protect each other by alerting authorities of suspicious activity, helping out of town neighbors by picking up their mail and newspapers an keeping and eye on things.
Security cameras being present within the community can also deter crime, and catch criminals when crime is committed. Having multiple home within a community with visible security cameras can cause potential burglars to go to another area for fear of being seen on the cameras. If you have a Home Owner’s Association, consider speaking to them about getting a few outdoor cameras around the neighborhood.
