Water damage is the 2nd leading cause of home insurance claims nationwide. But, insurance does not cover all types of water damage.

Homeowners policies may not cover damages due to a flood, but they do cover other kinds of water damage. For example, they would generally pay for damage from rain coming through a hole in the roof or a broken window if the hole was caused by strong storm winds. On the other hand, if you have a hidden pipe leaking in your house and over time water damage occurs, that may not be covered. The only way to know for sure is to review your home owners policy.

The best type of insurance you can have for water damage in your home is a leak detection device. Broken hoses, burst pipes or faulty appliances can cause catastrophic damage to your home if a water leak goes unnoticed. Having a detection device in place not only helps you avoid expensive structural damage, but by detecting the water leak as soon as it happens, you can also prevent dangerous health risks from the resulting mold after a flood.

Based on a recent study by the Insurance Research Council, 60% of property claims are caused by faulty indoor appliances or plumbing leaks, 25% are caused by rain or flooding and 11% are caused by sewers and sump pumps.

How does it work? The leak detection device from Modern Systems will trigger an alarm on any new or existing security system when the probe comes in contact with water. Your system will then notify you via text or phone of the detected leak. The water sensor will restore the alarm after no water is in contact with the probe for another 3 minutes.

Don’t fall victim to faulty pipes and plumbing. Get your leak detection device installed today. For more information, call Modern Systems at 1-800-252-7664.
