Summer is an exciting time for children; the weather is beautiful most days, and it opens the door for loads of fun outdoor activities. However, being outdoors also comes with a bit of danger due to the heat, as well as the unknown. These are a few safety tips for kids that are easy to implement and manage while enjoying time outside.
Staying Safe on the Street
One of the first KY summer safety tips you should take advantage of for the kids is keeping them safe on busy streets. Teach your children about the importance of walking, not running, across the street. Sidewalks are plentiful in busy areas; show them that it’s imperative to use them if at all possible. Making eye contact with drivers on the road before moving is also critical.
Keeping Safe on Wheels
Teach your kids the importance of keeping their bodies safe while biking, rollerblading, skateboarding, etc. Buy a properly fitted helmet that is designed for the particular activity that your child enjoys. Always remember that mom and dad should also be wearing helmets!
Safety in the Water
Of course, one of the most vital KY summer safety pointers is learning to keep your children safe in water. Stay within a reasonable distance of younger swimmers at all times, preferably at around 2 feet or so. Understand that no person is too great of a swimmer to risk drowning. Drowning can occur in all types of water sources including, bathtubs, baby pools, toilets, buckets, etc. If there is enough room for a child’s face to submerge underwater, drowning is a risk.
Safety in the Sun
Keeping your children safe while having fun in the sun is just another one of the most integral safety tips for kids. Always use sunscreen with the appropriate SPF whenever the sun is out. Sunburns can happen even on overcast days, so keep this in mind as well. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside, and be sure to reapply in two hour intervals. Reapply it sooner if the child will be swimming or sweating. Toweling off can also remove sunscreen on accident.
Keeping Ticks Away
You can probably guess that a good KY summer safety guide isn’t complete without a tick safety section. Understand that ticks are carriers and the causes of various types of illnesses including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease. You can easily protect your children by dressing them in long clothing and tucking in the openings to other articles of clothing, using tick repellant, teaching them to keep away from overgrown areas, and more. After a day outside in green areas, check your children’s bodies for ticks.
Outdoor Cooking Safety Tips for Kids
Cooking outdoors is a very popular activity during the warmer months. However, it can present its own dangers for children. Keep children away from grills and other outdoor cooking apparatuses. Don’t leave out quickly perishable foods, and check foods that can be accidentally under-cooked to make sure that you grilled them all the way through.
Preparing Your Summer First Aid Kit
Last (but not least), prepare a summer first aid kit! Keep adhesive bandages, tape, gloves, thermometers, and the numbers of emergency services on hand in the kit. Restock the kit every time it’s been used and keep one in the car, as well as at home!
